10 reasons to travel to Crimea, Ukraine
1) Crimea's Scenic Beauty
The scenery in Crimea is quite breathtaking. Spectacular mountains and cliffs form the backdrop to the sparkling Black sea. Crimea contains expansive forests, deep canyons and fascinating rock formations, interlaced within a myriad of palaces and fortresses. Few places in the world posses such a combination of natural beauty and historical monuments in such a small place.
2) Historical Monuments of Crimea
Being a host to many different peoples over the millennia, Crimea is awash with history, the remnants of which you can view today. You can visit the ancient cave towns of Bakhchiserai, the extensive Greek ruins at Xersones, the spectacularly located Geonese fortress of Sudak, the palace of Lividia; where Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill decided the fate of Europe after the 2nd World War. Crimea has incredible variety - and something for everyone.
3) Crimea is not hard on the wallet
The prices in Crimea and Ukraine as a whole are reasonable. Accommodation is the biggest expense, and is not always much cheaper than in the West, however most other things are half price or less. Your budget will stretch far for things such as taxis, meals out and souvenirs.
4) Crimea is Safe and Hassle Free
Crimea and the Ukraine as a whole is a safe destination for tourists. Terrorism is not an issue. Violent crime is low; you are no more likely to encounter a serious problem here than in west Europe and America. In addition, there is little of the constant hassling of tourists in Crimea associated with many of the other popular destinations in the world today; such as Egypt and India.
5) Crimea is as yet 'Undiscovered' by Westerners
Unlike some 'tourist factory' destinations, Crimea is a relatively undiscovered destination for Western tourists. Many Russian and Ukrainian tourists holiday in Crimea in July and especially August, but outside of these months Crimea's sights are yours for the taking - and you won't experience the overcrowding associated with better know destinations around the world.
6) Crimea is a Vibrant and Rapidly Changing Part of the World
Crimea was part of the Soviet Union until 1991, when, as part of Ukraine, it became independent and stepped onto the path to full on capitalism. Today, Crimea and the Ukraine as a whole is a place in transition; caught between capitalist materialism and the mentality of bygone Communist times. Sleek black BMWs speed past historical monuments to Lenin. Teenagers in Nikes skateboard next to pro-Communist demonstrations. Crimea is vibrant, dynamic and packed full of energy.
7) Opportunity for Outdoor Adventure Activities in Crimea
Crimea's sea and mountains offer great opportunities for outdoor adventure activities, including diving, hiking, caving and rock climbing. The infrastructure here is not highly developed, but that's what makes it so exciting. If you are hiking in the mountains for instance, you can be close to amenities and comforts whist still feeling like you are out there in the wild.
8) Weather in Crimea
Beach like weather starts around the beginning of May and carries on until the end of September. Summer is long and the skies are blue. Being further South than the rest of Ukraine and Russia, winter is mild and spring starts early. Autumn is glorious too, as the forests of Crimea turn into a brilliant opulence of reds and yellows.
9) Crimea is in Ukraine - Which is Visa Free!
You want to visit an ex-Soviet country - then Ukraine is the only one that is currently visa free. To go to neighbouring Russia, for example, you need to get a visa in advance that is costly, and which takes time and is inconvenient to arrange. Travelling to Ukraine is easy. You get a 3-month stamp at the border, and that is it -no fuss and no bother.
10) Crimea is Close to Kiev
Kiev is a booming city that shouldn't be missed. The city contains a multitude of stunning churches, and has a fantastic domed roof skyline. It is the capital city of Ukraine, and only 1.5 hours flight from Crimea. Besides, you'll probably travel to Crimea through Kiev, so you can stop of for a couple of days and see it for yourself.
